Layers of Identity

My cultural collage was pieced together from my parents’ rich and diverse backgrounds.

My mother, born in Panama to a blended Scottish and Caribbean ancestry, and my father, from the US, had roots that reached through both Spanish and Native American heritage. Though I was born and raised in the US, our home existed as a self-contained universe of tradition. The exotic aromas wafting from our kitchen and the polyrhythmic sounds spinning on our record player reflected traditions that bore little resemblance to the world just beyond our front door.

First Taste of Change

A pivotal moment that changed the course of my life is forever etched in my memory: the day our family moved from the United States to Brazil, opening a new chapter in our lives. At seven years old, I was securely buckled into my seat on a Pan Am flight bound for Pernambuco. A small cup of caju juice was handed to me, glowing like liquid sunshine. That first sip delivered an unexpected tang that made my brown cheeks pucker in surprise—a moment that quietly shaped my earliest sense of wonder. The distinctive flavor was utterly foreign to my palate, and somehow, even in my young mind, I understood that our destination would bring new, unimagined sensations.

It was my first lesson in receiving the unfamiliar with curiosity rather than resistance.

Lessons That Became My Compass

Those formative years living in and traveling throughout Brazil shaped the lens through which I saw every journey that followed. From the red, hot dust of the sertão to the cool, emerald canopy of the Mata Atlântica, I learned that wealth flows from open hands, not bank accounts, and that the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary when you pause long enough to notice. I discovered that resilience isn’t just surviving difficulty—it’s choosing to remain compassionate and hopeful even when the world feels hollow. From these early contrasts grew my understanding that meaningful travel isn’t about collecting destinations. It’s about cultivating the ability to see wonder in overlooked details and to approach each new place with the same open-hearted curiosity that once helped a seven-year-old girl navigate her first taste of caju juice. That same wonder still moves through me now, shaping not only how I continue to explore but how I invite others to experience the world.

The Longing That Led Me

After a most spectacular childhood in Brazil, life carried me back to the United States, where I uneventfully became an adult. But wanderlust runs deep in those who’ve tasted difference early. By my late thirties, I found myself moving across the Atlantic to France, then Spain, where I spent nearly a decade. Yet even in the fullness of my life in Madrid, a familiar restlessness began to stir once again. After nine years in one place—longer than I’d ever stayed anywhere since childhood—I knew it was time to seek something more.

Al-Maghrib called to me with its promise of exotic complexity and contrast. In 2017, curiosity became commitment as I found work in Marrakech and settled in the small town of Tahannout, which became my home for three transformative years.

Looking back, I realize that between the red clay roads of rural Brazil and the ochre hills of Tahannout, my life had been guided by wanderment.

An Echo Between Worlds

As a girl in Northeast Brazil, I ran barefoot along dirt trails, plucked fruit from tree tops, and visited neighbors with handfuls of their sweetness. The village farmer’s market—the heartbeat of the week—overflowed with color, fragrance, and sound, brought to us from the surrounding hills.

Years later, living in Northwest Africa, those memories came rushing back—not in dreams, but in the rhythm of real life. I watched farmers descend mountain paths on donkeys, their handwoven baskets bursting with prized produce, as they made their way to the weekly souk in my town. The scene was so familiar it felt like time folding in on itself. And then there were the little girls—barefoot, curious, and giggling—knocking gently at my front door with fruit, just as I once did in Brazil.

It’s in these echoes of life that I’ve come to understand my purpose. I’m not just crossing countries—I’m reconnecting threads of identity, weaving a story that continues across landscapes and languages.

Intersection of Identities

I’ve always existed at the intersection of worlds. The cultural mash-up of my existence often left me feeling like a perpetual observer during childhood and adolescence, never fully belonging to any single world but granted a unique perspective on them all. What once felt like isolation—feeling like an outlier—gradually revealed itself as a gift. It nurtured the adaptive skills that now allow me to move comfortably between the many countries across five continents stamped in my life’s passport and the four languages deposited in my lexical bank. I find myself constantly intrigued by the rich diversity of our human experience and the deep wisdom it offers the conscientious explorer.

A Path Sparked by Purpose

Wanderloving Travel was officially founded in May 2025, but its roots stretch back to a soul-stirring group journey I curated to Morocco in 2023. I was confident they would enjoy the trip, but what I didn’t expect was the outpouring of heartfelt feedback, the deep connections formed, and the overwhelming joy shared among travelers. What began as a passion project under the name Journey Beyond Destination was destined to become something more. That single journey became my catalyst, giving me the clarity and courage to pursue this work not as a hobby, but as my professional calling.

The Heart Behind the Brand

I created Wanderloving Travel in response to a quiet but persistent challenge I saw in the industry—the need for journeys that hold sustainability, accessibility, and inclusivity not as afterthoughts, but as guiding values from the very beginning. More and more travel companies are stepping into this space, embracing one or two of these pillars with intention. But weaving all three into every experience remains a complex endeavor, one that requires collaboration, creativity, and a shared commitment to raising the standard. Not every destination or supplier is fully equipped to deliver on all fronts just yet, but that’s part of the journey, too. By supporting travel agencies, tour operators, and independent specialists who prioritize these values, travelers become active participants in this evolution, helping shape the demand that will drive a more conscious and equitable future of travel.

We also proudly champion two communities too often overlooked in mainstream tourism: LGBTQIA+ travelers and travelers with disabilities. This path is more than a profession—it’s a natural continuation of a life spent crossing borders: geographical, cultural, and personal. Each itinerary I shape carries the imprint of early migrations, layered identities, and a lifelong desire to build bridges through travel.
